Your poor WiFi has nothing to do with broadband and everything to do with your router.

You should first check its position. Generally speaking, central and away from other EM sources is good. Adjust the aerials (if there are any).

Next, ensure it is using 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with the same SSID. Check that you are away from other signals (on 2.4 **only** use channels 1, 6 or 11).

A WiFi scanner app on your phone can help with all the above jiggery-pokery.

Whether or not you need extra access points for WiFi will depend greatly on the size of your place. Powerline adapters can work OK if you don't want to lay cable, but ones connected by cable will give you the best performance. Wireless mesh units also exist (BT sell OK ones, you don't need a BT contract).
