I’ve found it absolute great. I’ve lived on my own in a couple of parts of the city (flatmates are a mixed blessing) and never felt at risk. Take any sensible precautions you’d take in any city and you’ll be fine. Find a nice place to live, check the place out at night before committing, and enjoy independent living.
