I live on the outskirts in a semi rural area. I never feel scared, living alone, if we're talking about the highly unusual stranger attack. You are far more likely to be attacked by someone you know than by a stranger. I am not going to live in fear simply because the media sell papers based on ramping up fear. Honestly, the number of people who will stand with a cigarette in their hand, and warn you about strangers!!!

So if you live alone, here is my take on how to stay safe:

If you are going up a ladder to change a light bulb, ring one of your friends and tell them, "I'm going to change a light bulb. I may fall and knock myself out. Would you like to stay with me on speaker? " Then, make sure you are wearing clean underwear and have done your make up so that you are not mortified when the ambulance comes.

If you are having a bath or a shower, tidy the house first, so that if you drown or slip and bang your head, the emergency services don't need to feel ashamed of their judgemental thoughts. ( Clarty little bitch: look at the STATE of her bedroom. )

If you're going to worry, worry about the stuff that's LIKELY to happen, not what's NOT likely to happen. And if you ARE going to worry about stuff like stranger danger which isn't likely to happen, then it's only fair to worry about all the other nonsense that's not likely to happen. Like waking up on the morning with the ears of a Springer Spaniel where your own used to be. It *could* happen.
