My view is the government has a housing shortage. While building more is part of the solution they are also combating people buying them up to rent. The people buying them to rent are generally able to afford more and drive the price up. Both these actions block 1st time buyers from being able to enter the housing market.

The 2nd home stamp duty is to make 2nd home owners think but does not stop them. You just need to put up the extra.

There is no easy system I can see for people buying for kids. What's to say they use that as a reason and then just build a property empire.

However I do have some possible solutions you can look into.
I think there is a baseline before it kicks in, something like 40k so buy a property under that?
Buy a static caravan or house boat, they don't apply for the 2nd tax.
If you sell within 3 years to your kids and have 1 home I think you can claim the stamp duty back

Do I think its unfair? No.
