I've seen [this](https://foodanddrink.scotsman.com/food/the-history-of-glasgow-morning-rolls-including-a-recipe-for-making-your-own/) recipe used and it's remarkably similar.

There's a different, lighter feel when you use something else as shortening. It's hard to describe but if you make them and then make a morning roll recipe, you'll see what I mean.
