I haven't read Tower Block but in another Glendinning book there's an interview with an architect who worked for Wimpey, who built the Mitchellhill tower blocks (now demolished) in Castlemilk. The Glasgow Corporation loved the idea of prestige, even if it meant building tower blocks on the very edge of the Glasgow boundary, off their daylighting axis and on top of a hill.
