I live in the east end. Its exactly 4miles to town on foot. Train & bus goes all the time. Doesn't have the reputation of the west or south but get more for your money and just as close to things. My train goes directly to Edinburgh & Loch lomond/Helensburgh for day trips.
The city has large parks everywhere so its quite good in that way.
