Yeah pretty much the same for us. House was bogging when we moved in, loads of rubbish and furniture we had been left to clear. Previous owners also didn’t give us the code to the house alarm so it was going off for hours before an electrician could disconnect it. The home report also said the boiler was fine but it clearly wasn’t working when we arrived.

I wouldn’t even bother trying to get your solicitor to get them to cough up. Ours tried but evidently all they need to do is refuse and say that you’ve got to take them to small claims court if you want them to reimburse you, which of course most people wouldn’t bother with.

After the boiler issue we decided to get the place checked out by an electrician (surely what the home report is for but clearly they’re a formality more than anything else) who told us the whole place needed rewired because the place was filled with frayed and burnt wires.

On top of that our neighbours don’t give a shit about the close, the garden or the bins. And you can smell the butchers downstairs, and hear the refrigerator fan from one of the bedrooms.

All things we had no idea about going in so I was feeling the same as you at the start.

A lot of these things haven’t changed but I do love living here now and don’t regret the decision to get a tenement. It’s a ballache you’ve got to do a lot of work but try to remind yourself that you’re putting elbow grease in to something that’s yours.
