This is really early days, and we have lots of setbacks which mean waste still gets diverted to landfill at times although many times we shuttle waste to other erf's as the waste does have a monetary value as well as penalty. its one of the situations where using a private company instead of the local council works - viridor foots the bill for any waste we have to landfill so that becomes a massive incentive to run the plant as effectively as possible, the initial plan was to run the plant on its own electricity and supply cheap or free heat to local homes as a way of increasing public acceptance, as yet the heating scheme is not up and running. I don't know the figures but i believe it is also more cost effective to sell power to the grid at peak times than use it to power the plant ( that's business i suppose). I suppose to answer the point about separation of waste which gets mixed and separated again at our facility, people need to get and stay in the habit of separating so that when the markets for cardboard and plastic open up again we are aleady doing it, as i said previously viridor will be sending plastics to a facility in England soon that is dedicated to plastics. Its not perfect just now but its the only way forward .
