Comment | As Glasgow and its surroundings form Scotland’s dominant urban area, lots of people here never really venture to other parts of Scotland and therefore have a limited understanding of the rest of the country, such as how people speak.
The Glasgow accent, regardless of class, is maybe the most recognisably “Scottish” in the country. I grew up in and around Dundee, and a lot of people who live in eastern Scotland, particularly in rural areas (Perthshire, Fife, Angus, Aberdeenshire etc.), are pretty softly-spoken in comparison to Glaswegians.
I think a certain big-city arrogance on the part of a lot of Glaswegians leads to them thinking they have a monopoly on true Scottishness. |
