As everyone has touched on, it was substantially cheaper than the west end and the flats are just as nice in plenty of areas. Furthermore, and this applies more pre pandemic, but it's an absolute doddle to get into town from The Southside.

Anyone going to work, socialising in town can stroll it in 45 mins from Shawlands, even quicker from Govanhill and buses and trains get you in in no time. West End isn't totally cut off either as you can get the bus or walk down to Bridge Street and you're at Kelvinbridge in under 10 minutes. You can also cycle via Vicky Road or Pollokshaws Road, both of which offer an easy alternative.

Govanhill, Cathcart Road, Victoria Road and parts of Strathbungo, are the closest things I've seen to London in Glasgow.
