I've personally been in your position. CBT will only work if you really want it to work, hence why your GP will compliment it with medication. Propanolol won't directly affect your anxiety, but it'll lessen the symptons. So you may not be drenched in sweat, or your heart won't race etc. giving you a better chance at not having a fight or flight reflex.

Antidepressants take a few weeks to fully work, and you have to take them daily for several months or even years. If you miss a dose, you may experience withdrawel symptoms that can be anywhere from "ugh, this sucks" to "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU my eyeballs are exploding!".

If you want your doctor to listen to you, tell him the things you've done so far, to combat your anxiety. Don't lie, you want to get help, not score drugs, so it's imperative that you really did those things and sincerely think there is no other option.

Hope this helps.
