From a morality point of view they're incomparable.

From an infection control perspective they're directly comparable.

In the minds of the people involved its so important to them they're willing to break lockdown regulations. It's incredibly difficult for humans to go 14 months without social contact and keep being told 'oh its only 1/2/3/4 more weeks'. Eventually fatigue sets in and people decided they'd benefit more from breaking the rules than following them. Once enough people feel that way the rules are untenable.
