But you're still treating it as though there is a pragmatic compromise to be reached, that there is a healthy middle ground between tackling the virus and avoiding those negative impacts.

To do so is to misunderstand the nature of the virus. It's either under control or it isn't. It multiplies exponentially. If caseloads are allowed to increase, they don't stop increasing, and with the new variants deaths will still be significant.

There is no middle ground here. If cases are rising, we *have* to take action to suppress them, or we're back into mass death / NHS overwhelmed scenarios, exactly the same as it was last year. Only once enough people have been vaccinated does that change.
