I have the same problem, although I found blackout blinds that could be cut to the recess. However light still leaks all around them (of course!) and it bugs the shit out of me. I just have an old tee shirt within arms reach which I drape over my eyes if it becomes too annoying. I tried wearing a mask but it was not comfortable.
