For free parking you're going to be going further up into Queen Market Drive / Maryhill zone which is usually pretty congested. I wouldn't count on anything that's free parking staying free with the rate parking controls are going up. If you can suss it out, or at least just get away with keeping your car wherever you stay and get public transport to uni, it's worth bringing it IMO. Lots of nice places to visit near/in/around Glasgow that takes aeons to get to with public transport vs. a quick drive.
