40m out of a population of 1.8bn and yet human civilisation somehow magically survived. So even that wasn't catastrophic and comparing it to the much less harmful covid is either asinine or bad faith. We didn't do lockdowns for the flu pandemics in the 50s and 60s or SARS and MERS and yet at no point was humanity really threatened.

Why do you care about transmission if it doesn't lead to deaths? Lockdowns are supposed to prevent deaths so that's the only metric worth looking at.
