I'm in a new build (technically a conversion of an office building). There are pros and cons but buying at a fixed price allowed me to skip the current bidding insanity. There will always be some teething issues, and I'm dreading the Council Tax bill (still being assessed...) but weighing everything, renting for several months would have just been money down the drain for us (in our particular situation).
I would at least consider new builds if I were you.

PS - In the rest of Europe, new builds are desirable. It's here in the UK that people are really really anti. I think it could be a combination of poor building techniques/standards (sorry but it's true) and some kind of snobbery (wanting the Victorian features etc). I don't know. Lack of space is definitely a disadvantage - our new place is very small, however the location is perfect. I could never have afforded an "old" (tenement or sandstone) flat in this area.
