Funnily enough, I've pootled past old ladies on the pavement before, rung my bell, said 'Excuse me madam, just behind you on the left, sorry I'm a beginner', and they've always been like, 'oh don't worry dear, I would rather you cycled here than got hit by a car'. *They* seem to get it! Just last night on my way home, it was 9pm and the main road I was coming up to was empty, so I thought I'd give it a shot - 30 seconds later some boy racer came hooring along at what must have been 60mph - on a city centre road!
At the end of the day I'll happily cycle on main roads a) when they build real, useable bike lanes on them (not the kiddy-on, tokenistic, now you see 'em now you don't numbers they're bashing out just now to tick 'eco' boxes), or b) when mostly male motorists stop driving like complete fucking psychopaths. Until then, I'll cycle where I feel safest at any given time, and fuck anyone who says otherwise.
I'm not usually an angry person, but I worked in pubs for 20 years and have had quite enough of being spoken down to by men - cf. Janey Godley on Twitter!
