No one has mention this yet, but in 2005 the police set up a 'Violence Reduction Unit' as part of a national scheme aimed at curbing knife crime. They decided to stop treating it as a criminal problem and instead took a public health approach. There's quite a few articles that cover this and I think even some documentaries, but we went from "Murder capital of Europe", to a pretty safe environment. I'd say the police and social workers are largely responsible for the shift in ned culture. |
