Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed reply, I appreciate it. I had a feeling it would be something to do with the internet but wasn't sure how. I think I'm probably a wee bit older than you - I grew up in a rough area famous for young teams in the 80s and early 90s, and mind going to the shop with my gran and having to cross the road and take the long route cos there were 'bad boys' hanging about, hearing about folk getting stabbed at the chippy, etc.

I moved away to another city to go to Uni, which was the first time I'd had internet access, so it wasn't part of my life growing up. Regarding uni, I only got into the course I wanted to do because in those heady Blairite days my school was so bad it was part of a scheme whereby the unis had to take a certain number of us a year. After that we were abandoned with no follow-up support in a world totally alien to us. Needless to say I made a mess of uni the first time around and ended up in shit jobs for years. As you say we had grants then, but academia was such a codified milieu, as a working class person you didn't really stand a chance unless you had super-educated autodidact parents or something (and I didn't) - I went back 15 years later though and smashed it! I did notice the second time around that the demographic had definitely changed. Students on the whole are posher and squarer than they were in the 90s - or they certainly are at the Russell Group uni I was at. I probably found it harder money-wise they second time as the costs of living have risen so much, and also psychologically because I felt like I stuck out a lot more.

So aye I wasn't there to witness the demise of the young teams or see how it happened, all I know is that the area I grew up in had been 'gentrified'. I have also never 'done' social media, so it's mad to me how much of an effect that's had in turning everyone into these wee globalised consumers. Scotland has always had a massive crush on the US since the days of the 18th-19th century emigrations to the so-called New World(s), so it's fascinating how that's intensified in modern times due to the internet.

Also one last thing: I have a pal who is a retired criminal defence lawyer who says you saw a massive decrease in gang violence in Glasgow when weed started to become more readily available from the early 80s onwards. The wee guys were just getting too chonged to cause any bother. I do wonder if the skunk phenomenon has had a similar effect in more recent years!
