Not having your NI number isn’t an excuse to start applying for jobs. If you’ve previously had one and just lost it that’s an even worse excuse. See below.

Print out a hundred copies of your CV and hit the streets. Walk into every shop and restaurant and ask if they need anyone else working there. Hand them your CV to keep on file if they say no.

So many places have signs on the window saying staff needed etc. You could probably find a restaurant that has a need for a KP to start tonight if you tried hard enough. Posting on Reddit is not trying hard, it’s an excuse to make you think you’re looking for work.

If you don’t have a CV then that is your job for this morning. There are lots of examples of what to put on it when you don’t have any real experience online.

And to everyone who is going to tell me that you can’t just hand out CVs and expect to find a job: you can and it is a real thing. Smaller shops and independent restaurants hire almost solely this way. Larger chains will have an online process but smaller places do not.

“Working without a National Insurance number

You can start work before your National Insurance number arrives if you can prove you can work in the UK. You should tell your employer that you’ve applied for one, and give it to them when you have it.”
