It's a great big broad river valley, clouds gather here and stick unfortunately. I used to live in a high rise building and you could see it all happen - sometimes there was just a wee sliver of blue sky on the horizon. Contrary to popular belief, you generally get better weather in the Highlands (with the exception of various other cloud-traps up there) - windier and more changeable. In the islands and north of Inverness in particular, it's rare for it to be cloudy and rainy for days on end like happens down here.

To be fair, it's been a particularly shite spring and early summer - the worst I remember in several years.
