I know eh, so many outdoors guides etc. just assume everyone has a car. Just think of the public transport routes and have a look on the map to see where you fancy - so on the train for a day-trip you've got the Ayrshire coast; northwards you have the Oban line which will take you to the Arrochar Alps; the Fort Bill train which will take you to bits of the West Highland Way north of Loch Lomond; and the Snekkie train which goes through Perthshire and Stirling. Buses you've got the Oban bus which will also take you to Arrochar and further to the hills around the Rest and Be Thankful area; and the Fort Bill/Skye bus that goes up the west side of Loch Lomond. Walkhighlands is searchable for walks accessible by public transport, although some of the others are actually a relatively short walk from transport links.

A few more ready-made days out:

Get the train to Weymss Bay and the boat to Bute - you could go to Mount Stuart (a phenomenally trippy stately home with amazing gardens), or get the bus to Kilchattan Bay and walk the circular route which takes in awesome views of Arran and a very atmospheric old ruined chapel called St Blane's. Have a drink in the Weymss Bay station bar on your way back, the regulars are great craic.

Get the train to Dunkeld & Birnam (this is only about £16 day return btw, bargain) and go for a walk round the Hermitage. If you like trees you'll be in heaven. Cracking bakers for lunch snacks and nice pubs for a drink after in Dunkeld.

Get the train to Balloch and the bus to Balmaha to go up Conic Hill - do it as early as you can but, it's like bloody Sauchiehall Street after about 11am.

Train to Gourock, ferry to Dunoon, bus to Benmore Botanic Gardens - you can also take in Puck's Glen while you're there.

Dumgoyne Hill is unglamorous but has great views and is less than an hour on the bus from the city centre. There's a distillery right next to it!

Stirling's a nice day out if you've never been before - so much history, and the woods around the Wallace Monument are lovely for a walk.

Anyway mibbes when the OP's outta the B&B jail I can start on the camping trips via public transport, but not now cos I'll be here all night lol. Happy tramping! :)
