It's a really interesting debate u/elgropo , I can completely understand how am organisation the size of the NHS can end up inefficient without the incentives of competition and business survival, and I can almost see the logic of targets as an attempt to create that incentive. But I do also think it's vitally important that healthcare is available to anyone who needs it, especially those who don't have the resources for private healthcare. I can take a certain amount of inefficiency if the payoff is universal healthcare. But that's not to say that we shouldn't be constantly striving to improve. I'd guess that those staff who work under the inefficient systems find it more frustrating than anyone else - people (generally) love their jobs, and just want to be able to do them well!

Maybe one day we'll find a way to run things efficiently, without needing the driver of competition..
