If you want to get out of town for a day, Goatfell on Arran is probably the nicest hill to do as a day-trip. Get an early train to Ardrossan and the boat to Arran. There is a wee bus takes you to the bottom of the hill, at the castle. Even if you don't make it all the way up, you'll have a lovely day out in Brodick:

If you're veggie I recommend Ranjit's Kitchen on the south side. Have a great time :)
