If you live in EK you're wanting a car, the town probably contains the majority of the roundabouts in the UK and everything is driver-centric.

The main train station in EK is in an odd location in the 'village' part of it, although quite close (walking distance) to the main shopping centre.

The train service is generally good, but it's not without its quirks.

If the train's cancelled (which it can be quite often, especially in the summer when the rails heat up or in the winter where EK has it's own climate and can get very snowy/icy) you're buggered.

The trains are 80's 156 British Rail DMU (diesel multiple unit) stock and aren't the most comfortable things, very noisy and get quite chilly in the winter, and rather warm in the summer. Some of the carriages have been refurbed though. Takes about 40/45/50 min to Glasgow Central. Although there's plans to electrify the line and then there'll be newer stock. Scouting has already been done by Network Rail, I'd expect to see it done in the next decade.

The bus to Glasgow takes quite a while. If you're using Hairmyres station there's no direct bus to Glasgow nearby unless you walk through a dodgy woods passage behind the Department for International Development (DFID) building & through an industrial estate to a bus stop on the dual carriageway.

Source: Used to commute daily from Paisley to Hairmyres for work.
