Do you mind if I ask why it's impossible? If it's because of your landlord or something, fair enough. If it's a work commitment sort of thing then there are lots of pets that you can get which require very little upkeep.

I have a gecko for example. He gets fed every couple of days, and I have a timer for his heat lamp to go on and off each day. They can be interactive with their owner once they are used to you, but also don't mind being left alone as they are solitary. Because they are solitary and also store fats in their tail, they can go weeks without care or food - and it's no issue to them or their health. This is great for me when I go on holiday for a week, any longer and I get someone to care for him. He's going on 15 now, and he's an adorable, colourful old boy. Even everyone who says they don't like reptiles ends up loving him.
