To be fair though, the troops were to quell a return to violence, not the actual violence. They decided they couldn’t trust local troops so it took time to deploy them from elsewhere.
But yeah, it was a ridiculous show of strength in the face of very reasonable grievance, which ultimately contributed to the first Labour government.
