I think a lot of people assume that once we switch to electric cars, a lot of the currently planned changes to roadscapes will be unnecessary. But I don't think that's really the case.

The measures on London Rd, Wallacewell Rd and Royston Rd have been brought in as part of the council's 'Spaces for People' programme. But there are big plans more generally to reassign roadspace - even on arterial roads - over from cars to buses & bikes.

Reducing pollution (in both the global and local sense) is only one part of it. It's also largely about rebalancing the space given to transit options more generally, and righting the wrongs of the last 75 years of city planning. Making the use of road space more equitable for different modes, and giving people the option to cycle if they need or want to.
