That's because a battery's performance is temperature dependent, so it didn't 'fail' last night, it's just that it was already degraded and the cold put it over the edge. Or, if it's particularly old and some water has got in, suddenly you get ice forming inside. For these reasons you usually find out your battery needs replacing when winter arrives.
