Get a shallowish metal bowl and make a ramp leading up to it, smear some peanut butter around the rim about 2 or 3cm below the top and then put a shallow depth of peanut oil into the bowl - around 5-8mm. They will walk up the ramp to find the tasty peanut butter smell, try to get to the peanut butter and fall into the peanut oil at which point they will be too lubricated to be able to climb back out the bowl. In the morning, you will find a wee bowl with squirmy oily mice in it. Let them run around in a shallow depth of warm water with a little hand soap to wash the oil out of their fur and then pop them into a cardboard box to take them out of your flat to a field somewhere and release them far, far away. This is the most humane method of dealing with mice I've found, and its super effective because they cannot resist peanut butter.
