Not all addicts are junkies but all junkies are addicts situation. Junkies are by and large junkies and its negative connotations are usually reserved for a particular subset of addicts regardless of any offence that may be taken or how it might hurt someone facing their problems. Can people be kinder, yes, but ultimately too many seem to want to take it on themselves to control the language of words and definitions of those words through their own biased prism. To call a spade a spade may not always be kind but it's not wrong.

As much as we might empathise with them, and they are ultimately vulnerable, the reference to a junkies is a well earned one in the environments they operate as many others have fallen victim as those addicts supported their own vulnerabilities with little care and often to the detriment of others. The world doesn't function viewing everyone as victims, in any context everyone is a victim that need help and support but to minimise or pacify the language does not negate the situation or its effects by and of itself.

More than anything, especially Glasgow, the words we use are always secondary to the way in which they are conveyed. It's not what you say but how you say it as can be evidenced by the plethora existing and unlimited development of words and phrases used here to convey a more context based 'meaning' totally unrelated to their dictionary definitions.
