I don't think that anyone is suggesting that this not extremely challenging behaviour. None of us want to be around it. But there's a difference between feeling understandably angry with someone and using slurs when you describe them. Once you start labeling other human beings as scum or "less than" or maintaining that you don't care how they ended up in that situation, it becomes OK to treat them worse than animals. That's not good for any of us. We can be pissed off, we can quite reasonably say that it's not our job to resolve the problems other human beings are encountering, but when we start insulting them, or saying that we don't give a shit about the suffering of others - that's on us, not them.

Can you think about the worst time in your life - the absolute worst you've ever felt? Now imagine that everyone you encountered at that time (including those closest to you) made it clear they despised you and that they called you names. Welcome to the world of addicts and alcoholics. That's how they feel all the time except when they're high or drunk.
