What you can see on these [side-by-side](https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=55.86032&lon=-4.25513&layers=126160581&right=131877585) maps is that in 1778 there was no real grid system to speak of. It was very 'organically' built.

By 1807 not only was there a grid system in place, but it's clear from the map that there was empty space reserved for future roads. This was 4 years before New Yorks plan was implemented.

So New York was clearly planned after Glasgow.

And while your mention of Carribbean grid layouts is very likely the source of both Glasgow and New Yorks influences directly... however [St Petersburg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Homann_MapSpb1716-17.png) predates them both, planned in 1716.
