Comment | Route: Easy going mostly. Very little is on anything not resembling a well-maintained trail. Three real ascents (Conic Hill, Devil's Staircase, and Kinlochleven) but none are particularly strenuous. Everything is signposted. The route is hoaching with walkers.
Prep: I did it in seven days with no real walking experience and carrying equipment. A bunch of hillwalking friends have done it in five and six days. A couple of ultrarunners I know did it in three. I thought seven was good. There's only one short day (9 miles from Kingshouse to Kinlochleven), which for us came after the longest day (19 miles fron Tyndrum to Kingshouse). If I did it again, I'd use a baggage company. I'd rather enjoy the walk than have it turn into a slog with 12KG on my back.
Places to stay: We stayed at Drymen Campsite (fine), Rowardennan Hostel (rundown but I loved it. Three course dinner for £13, equal parts hilarious and filling), Beinglas Campsite (good but the shop reams you), By the Way Campsite (good), Kingshouse (bunkhouse is shite and overpriced), Blackwater (the place isn't manned overnight so wee raving neds are common), and Guisachnan Guesthouse (place is a bit Faulty Towers but is cracking). |
