Yeah - I read about it last year (or sometime in the past, the pandemic has fucked with my sense of time).
The only positive thing is that they have cut the trees and shrubs at the crossing part, so pedestrians can actually see oncoming traffic now. I prefer it to the old "leap of faith from behind a bush" method.
