I'm confused, in your previous comment, didn't you imply that the "less educated" tried to adapt their accent because of a sort of insecurity? Then here you've suggested that going to university means you're more likely to adapt your accent?

Not that going to uni is some failsafe proof of intelligence, particularly social, although exposure to a wide variety of accents must have an impact.

I can't say I've ever met anyone pretending to have another accent in every day life, it's more just them trying to be understood.
