Alternatively, there's the pay-as-you-go sims in pretty much all airports and newsagents and such.
As for meeting new people and such, keep an eye on this reddit as one of the members has a pub meet up for members which is posted in advance, could be a good way to meet folks. Once you're settled and covid restrictions lift, there'll be more social opportunities as social groups (coffee/book groups etc) get back together - there's a site called [meetup.com](https://meetup.com) which some groups post on, you might find that handy.
