In the Highlands/more remote areas - if you're upstream of any possible livestock and buildings then the water should be fine. Generally the faster moving the better.
Outside taps exist in a few places and usually they're fine. Most shops or cafes will be happy to refill your water too. Especially once you're out of the city.
