I'm not sure anyone is arguing that they absolutely need to be in person. Even the thread OP seems more annoyed about the lack of community and resources than remote lectures specifically.

A few people are giving advantages to in-person lectures (social stuff, easier to focus for some people, etc), but these benefits can wait until things are a bit more stable - there were plans for optional in-person lectures where I am, but those were shelved for at least the next semester. The option of remote or in-person is nice to have, but nobody's arguing we should be risking people's health for it.
