It really depends on the game/group your with! I've played with the same people in all the games as we all started at the same time after meeting on Roll20.com (a great website for online D&D and other TTRPGs) and we tend to take a bit longer on most things due to indecisiveness and checking out everything we possibly can haha.

The first game I joined was a full campaign (Lost mines of Phandelver....brilliant for first time players!) and that ran for a couple of months during one 3-4 hour session every Wednesday evening. Then we had a couple of weeks before we started the campaign I'm currently running which I've been running for the last 4 months every Wednesday.

The other game I'm a part of is a homebrew campaign (homebrew = not official and made up by the person that's running the adventure) and started at basically the same time as the first one and it's nowhere near finished yet.

You can also do a "One shot" which is generally a single session which usually lasts for 3-4 hours.

Tl;dl; there's no set time it can take, and it mostly depends on how fast or slow your group moves!
