Do not go near the Calton skate spot, unless you bring a brush with you. Its loaded with broken bottles and drunks normally spend their time getting pished there. The Doulton fountain outside the Peoples Palace is very close by, is cleaner and has beautifully flat ground for new skaters to find their feet.
