Some of the most interesting folk I've met on nights out have been there on their tod and ended up drinking with my group. Also, tons of folk go to polo alone as the exclusively gay options aren't as prevalent as the other options for straight folk, so you'll find a lot more people there on their own. Been in polo a couple of times with some gay pals and there's always folk floating about who aren't with anyone.
