Not sure on private but I was in the same boat. Was diagnosed with social anxiety and depression, went back and forwards for years and then had assessments and was diagnosed with ADHD and Aspergers.
All I can say is keep the pressure on with the GP do online assessments and take in the results and show them.They can't deny you the right to have an assessment.
