Getting a better rate when you’re there is an old wives tale. It might be true some places. It might be the opposite for others. So many factors involved. You rarely get the best rate anywhere by just walking up now.

What currency are you going to be buying?

In a modern world you will get best rates online. ICE followed by Ramsdens are usually best.

The other option is to just withdraw money out of a cash machine at your destination. You’ll get the interbank rate then whatever fees your bank charge you. Will probably be competitive with the spread on the high street exchange rate.

If dead set on exchanging cash at your destination, you can get English bank notes at HSBC or in the bank machine at the airport.
