1: You will make friends naturally in Glasgow. Scottish people are generally more friendly and its part of the culture to provide hospitality to “guests.” That old folktale that in Scotland you are legally obliged to let a stranger use your toilet if they ask.. it comes from old Scots common law requiring hospitality to be shown to all guests. You will start off as a guest and become family in Scotland.

In London, there are obviously more people but to actually go out and make friends, it seems to be people who are transient like you, or meeting people through specific clubs or meet-ups and social events. At Uni it will be very easy to meet friends, local and non local.

2: with just 400 miles between Glasgow and London, expect much of the same but with more rain.

3: Glasgow has a big food scene. It doesn’t have some of the world famous restaurants like London, or the uber popular social media hyped up places that all the z listers and influencers want to be seen at. There are of course the local “places to be seen.”

There are some great Indian restaurants in the city. Mr Singhs is a Glasgow institution. India Quay (overlooking the squinty bridge) is another favourite of mine. The Chicken Tikka Masala was invented right in Glasgow, and is now Britains national dish.

4: SAFETY. A touchy subject. Glasgow has a reputation as a hard city. To outsiders, it has struggled to shake the reputation from the days of razor gangs, knife crime and gang culture. Most of the reputation came from gang-on-gang fighting and its highly unlikely that a sensible, normal citizen would get themselves caught up in trouble. Then or now. Its a city that recognises its past but has progressed massively in the last 15-20 years.

There are of course poverty stricken areas of Glasgow with troublesome characters. Its like any big city. If you actively looked for trouble you can find it.

Glasgow still has its fair share of nutters which is why they don’t have the same street crime problems as London. Muggings, moped gangs, street robberies are common in London, even if you are statistically unlikely to be a victim. That kind of criminal activity for a thug in Glasgow is like Russian roulette. Even the local women will beat them up and send them on their way.

Central Londons transport network has Glasgow beaten though. For price, connectivity and multi modal transport. Not that Glasgow is terrible. Just the London Underground network is fantastic.
