| Comment | Not necessarily for OP but for anybody who in general is lonely or out of work, or otherwise without "purpose".
Consider volunteering. There are tonnes of volunteering positions doing all sorts of stuff. It doesn't have to be sorting through bin bags of jumble in a charity shop. There are all sorts of rewarding and engaging volunteering positions.
You get a chance to meet people without the added pressure of "looking for friendship" which can sometimes feel forced and laden with expectation. Who knows you might even meet your next significant other there.
In addition you get something that looks really good on your CV. It instantly tells the interviewer that you are somebody who has some get up and go and some self determination.
Finally, it can give you some sense that your existence is in some way meaningful, which can go a long way to improving self-esteem and then in turn boosting confidence. Most people find quiet confidence an attractive trait in a potential friend or partner.
