How many countries have been created or had their borders redrawn since say, 1642 ish?because that's how long ago we began fighting the Irish incursion into ulster in Ireland. Borders are redrawn all the time as countries war, migrate and are created / fall.
The fact is the majority of people there are British and have been for generations and generations. They see themselves as Irish but British. The same way I see myself as Scottish but British.
