I hadn't even given a thought to the knock on impact this will have for local neighborhood economies, like has happened already on Victoria Road.

I was thinking in more simple practical terms, in terms of taking cars off the road, giving people equitable and safe means of travel to jobs, appointments etc. across the city. That sort of thing.

But you're completely right and have hit on something important here.

It undoubtedly will have huge benefits for local retailers and neighbourhoods. The cycle lanes will also come (I'm imagining in large part) with other public realm improvements, like on Victoria Road. More space for people to live, relax, enjoy their neighbourhoods, in more pleasant surroundings: and of course meaning they're also likely spending more money locally.

It could really positively transform neighbourhoods as a side effect.
